Dog Alone

We had been in camp in Mkomazi for a few days when Fitz and Lucy invited us to drive out to the release Boma  on the Tsavo border and help with the translocation of a small unit of wild dogs.
We had painted this extraordinary pack canid for many years but this was our first time witnessing a release.
We squatted for a while inside the wire of the rickety enclosure as this beautiful dog watched us intently. As we traced his flank in sepia across our paper the wilddog circled us inquisitively. Suzi took this beautiful image on her Leica M6 just before  the wilddog scampered from the open gate and up over a rocky outcrop to freedom.
As he gained speed, his sinewy legs churning up a cloud of ochre dust in his wake, we wondered what awaited this wilddog and his fellow pack members in this vast wild eco-system. We hoped he would survive, a wild dog alone,  a wild dog free….
