Two Hudson Bay Bears

Our first two polar bears: observed out on the back of a tundra buggy on the wind swept shores of Hudson Bay in the fall of 1996.
After over twenty-five years of making our art in Arctic regions it is our first interactions with polar bears that remains the most indelible in our minds: the taste of ozone, the freezing wind on our faces, the movement of 1000 lb polar bears ambling close by, the visceral, austere nature of the environment… and the vulnerability and stark beauty of a great predator that is here now hit might not be for much longer…

Even back then, we had a sense of great change coming to the Arctic. Spending months exploring the vast wilderness in the company of expert guides, trackers, field research biologists  and climate scientists has greatly informed our work and our understanding of our subject matter.  The ‘ground truth’ we have gained in the wild remains with us, and reminds us daily of the need to keep learning about our place as a species like any other. No more and no less.
